Top Level Domain Names – Applications Now Public
ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) is the organization which manages the global domain name network – in recent months they have announced that businesses will be able to purchase their own gTLD (Generic Top Level Domain). They have now announced the gTLD’s which have been applied for.
A selection of these are:
.bbc
.food
.ford
.game
.google
.guardian
.wales
.cymru
Whilst this may look good, there are a few issues with this:
If two businesses want the same gTLD then it will go to auction, potentially costing a lot of money.
Consumers may find it difficult to understand.
Some companies may purchase lots of these in order to gain a monopoly.
The gTLD’s are set to be released in late 2012 / early 2013.
